Welcome to Astronomy-Leelanau, a website of the Hahnenberg Observatory, Lake Leelanau. MI.  The observatory houses the largest telescope in the area, a 14" Meade LX200GPS-SMT Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope, an 8" Orion reflector, and a  Coronado h-Alpha telescope for viewing sun flares and prominences, along with CCD and digital SLR cameras for optimal planetary and deep-sky photography. Below, the inside of the moon's most impressive crater, Tycho. UFO Believers, take heart!

The United Nations has designated the year 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy. Whether this was purposeful or just a coincidence, it lines up perfectly with their alleged plan to encourage disclosure of information about the UFO phenomenon next year.

While the recent visit of Pope Benedict to the UN gave the international body more credibility among some observers, many in the U.S. have looked upon the UN as valuable only in the humanitarian efforts it makes...certainly not as a world governing body.

Anyway, according to those who see the government of the US and those of other countries as engaging in a global "cover-up" of the existence of alien beings, the following are the comments of Bill Knell, a popular speaker, author and consultant with eclectic interests. He is best known for his paranormal research and seminars...

"It’s entirely possible that the USA and other powerful nations have begun to run out of excuses when it comes to explaining away UFO sightings and encounters. With the number of credible witnesses and whistleblowers that have come forward on the rise ,and instantaneous reporting of large scale UFO events on the internet, nations in the know are beginning to face a real problem of credibility.

While most people understand a need for a certain level of government secrecy regarding the protection of citizens and property, there is always a danger that concealing too much information or lying about security issues can lead to a total loss of credibility. If people lose confidence in their government, it will not be long before that system of government is replaced by another. The United Nations is the logical place for disclosure."

Wonderful! Finally we'll know the truth ... or will we ... the Great Cover-up might just continue! I have watched countless UFO programs where everything from alien abductions to alien bodies from crashed UFOs are "documented."

In all of this, a little common sense needs to come into play. If there were any real, tangible evidence of a crashed alien craft, it would make world news. This "cover-up" conspiracy theory is nonsense...just as the Loch Ness monster is nonsense.

There are unidentified objects that people all over the world have seen. I think the evidence is overwhelming. However, to attribute these sightings to anything other than phenomena we simply do not understand would be pushing credibility. Daily we discover more anomalies in our own solar system. Why do we think UFOs are necessarily alien craft when there could be a perfectly natural explanation which we, as yet, do not understand? We don't even know how to explain gravity satisfactorily yet.
